We have been studying Beginning Geography (Grades K-2) by Evan Moor.
The book has 4 sections:1)Map Skills; 2)Landforms and Bodies of Water; 3) Continents and Oceans and 4)Around the World with Animals.
So far we have finished the Map Skills section with Ibrahim (Sarah also joined us most of the time but we'll study everything again with her next year inshaAlla). Ibrahim really loves his geography book, since we have worked mostly with maps, he calls it "my map book". The worksheets and the activities were nice, each topic has several pages of practice activities. The language is simple so it helped Ibrahim to practice his reading too.
Anyways, map skills covers the following (pages 4-37)
- What is a Map;
- Positional Words- left, right, up and down;
- Cardinal Words-north, east, south, west;
- Compass Rose;
- Map Symbols;
- Map Key;
- Distance on a Map;
- Borders on a Map; Map Grids.
While learning about maps in Geography, we are doing "All about me "(learning about address, home/neighborhood map, age, phone number etc) and "Me on the Map" topics in our Social studies classes. So, we have combined some of the materials we have learned and did couple of projects. I think during kindergarten year most people do all these in Social Studies since they are very related to each other.
Project 1: My home and my family Lapbook.
Project 2: Me On the Map step (layer) book.
InshaAllah, I'll try to share more details of these two projects soon.
