Just before we started our kindergarten year kids began working with their Big Kindergarten workbooks. It has 320 pages of different activities and covers several subjects. Ibrahim finished the book now alhamdulillah and now I'm thinking about getting another supplementary workbook just like this one but little advanced. According to reviews Big 1st Grade book (continuation of this series) is not as good as Big K workbook but can be used as supplementary. We'll inshaAllah do some research and decide what to buy.
So, here I just want to share some sample pages from BigK workbook.
Overall I like the workbooks, it gives plenty of chance for kids to improve their skills necessary for starting school. All the worksheets are colorful and made interesting for kids. They do their work with confidence and don't get frustrated to understand their basics alhamdulillah. Since everything is in one book you can take it anywhere and work with whatever you want until you get tired mashaAllah : )

Assalaamu Alaikum!
Jazzakillaah Khayr for the review, This is almost the same as Brainquest Kindergarten Activity book. Maimoonah used to do it at the start but later it was boring for her I guess she refused to do it. She hates tracing now so may be that was one reason. Any way the book has the same contents with pictures like yours. May be you should get a higher level for Ibrahim so that it would be challenging. I went through the 1st Grade and 2nd Grade guidelines and I feel our kids will pass through 1st Grade before a year, am thinking aloud if I should drop the first and start the second or find something that I can do for a number of years according to her level, Umm Sara please check this and let me know what you think when time permits http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/primary/cambridgeprimary/resources

Since this would lead upto academic qualification that I am familiar of I am thinking if this would fit us. Please share your thoughts Insha Allaah, I value them : )
I am thinking aloud to follow this as they have stages for each age group and the books they have recommended are very familiar to me and available to buy.
wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi,
Jazakillahu khair sis Umm Maimoonah.
Yes, I think our workbooks are somehow similar to brainquest kindergarten activity book. Are there many tracings in the Brainquest? In ours they do tracings mostly while reviewing letters and numbers.Even though both of my kids know the letters/numbers etc they still liked the activities and learned some new words in English(since they do not know much). How about the transition math and Reading readiness? When we were doing our preschool curriculum I used to print out such worksheets and I really wished I could find a books with lot's of engaging activities. So, as a supplementary material the kindergarten workbooks worked for us : )
InshaAllah I'll go through the links you have provided and share my ideas soon.
Umm Maimoonah,
I went through Cambridge primary English, Math and Science framework. Does Stage means Grade? If that's the case then Grade 1 (in our place) is for kids 6-7.
Anyways, as you said homeschooling is faster so you can go faster according your child inshaAllah. I'm not sure if I would officially "skip" any grade but go according to my kid's level. For instance while they doing Preschool curriculum, they did more advanced works and now Ibrahim is doing Grade 1 (as well as Sarah in some cases) workbooks even though officially we are doing Kindergarten curriculum. So, I would just go according to their abilities and interests. Ibrahim is doing all these workbooks, but that does not mean he can actually study with 1st graders at this age.
I think Maimoonah is doing good in English, my kids need more practice, they can read, do their workbooks but I don't think they are strong enough. So, I guess we'll follow the guidelines and when it feels like they are ready for the next level they will start the next level inshaAllah.
By the way, since we will be reporting and later on kid's will be taking tests here, we will also follow their guidelines (i.e follow through books that are consistent with national standards). And I believe even by following the national standards kids can progress faster or learn more additional things like foreign language, Islamic studies, memorize Qur'an, different life skills etc). So, while teaching kids everything according to these different guidelines, we can try to incorporate different useful subjects too (instead of putting too much emphasis just on these standardized subjects like math, English, science etc)
Yes sis Umm Sara, I think it is Grades what they mean by stages.
Yes I agree with you, we can choose a national standards and go accordingly as well as do extra when we think it would interest them Insha Allaah! Yes I agree with you with regard to skipping. Its best that they learn things and we can go according to their pace Insha Allaah. If we are sure we on the right track for future as well then we can concentrate on other important subjects that you have mentioned also like life skills, as this is what most children who go to school miss. Jazzakillaah Khayr for taking the time to answer. Much appreciated!
